Passenger is the professional name that is used by music artist Michael David Rosenberg, who was born in 1984, in Brighton, England. He began learning guitar when he was young and wrote his first songs from the age of fourteen. He abandoned school when he became sixteen in order to focus on music and started singing in the streets and other public places. Passenger started as a folk-rock band in 2003 and after their dissolution in 2009, Rosenberg kept the name during his solo career.
He created the band with Andrew Phillips and along with other musicians recorded one studio album, 2007’s “Wicked Man’s Rest”. The group disbanded in 2009 and Rosenberg continued performing as a busker, supporting other artists in Australia. With the help of Phillips, he released his first album “Wide Eyes Blind Love”, which came out in November of the same year and was followed by “Divers & Submarines”, in the summer of 2010. He appeared in several live events in the UK and returned to Australia to record his second album “Flight of the Crow” which came out almost three months later. It included cooperations with other talented Australian musicians.
Passenger’s fourth album named “All The Little Lights” came out in February of 2012, peaking at no. 3 on the UK Albums chart. It included his first international success, the song “Let Her Go”, which reached the second position on the UK charts and reached no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became platinum in both the UK and the USA, while he toured with Ed Sheeran as a supporting act. His next two albums were 2014’s “Whispers” (no. 5 in the UK) and “Whispers II” that came out in April of 2015.
“Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea" came out in September of 2016 and was Passenger’s first album that topped the album charts in the UK, despite its mixed reviews. It was followed by the cover album “Sunday Night Sessions” and by his eight studio album named “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”, both of which came out in the summer of 2017. Passenger’s recent album is “Runaway” that came out in late August of 2018 and according to him contains elements of Americana music genre.
