Lynyrd Skynyrd tickets & concert schedule

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the oldest bands in the history of rock, remaining active until nowadays. The band's history begins in 1964, when Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar) and Bob Burns (drums), began playing together in Jacksonville, Florida. They found Allen Collins (guitar) and Larry Junstrom (bass) later and formed a band, using several names in the beginning, until they reach the name we know in 1970.

Skynyrd had become a big band until 1970, in the area of Florida and had performed in several live events, establishing their blues and hard rock style. The band's formation changed a lot of times during 70's, with Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Billy Powell (keyboards) becoming two of the longest members, until their deaths in 2001 and 2009 respectively. Their first album, named " (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)" came out in of 1973 and contains some of the band's most famous songs, such as "Free Bird" and "Simple Man". After their first two, the band released "Second Helping", including one of the band's signature songs, "Sweet Home Alabama", which reached no. 9 on the US charts.

The band released three more albums in 70's, with " Nuthin' Fancy" to separate (being recorded with drummer Artimus Pyle), since it reached the top 10 in the US Album charts. After the release of "Street Survivors" in 1977, a plane crash in October of that year, during the band's tour, caused the death of Van Zant, the band's two other musicians, along with a manager and the two pilots, while other members got injured. The album "Street Survivors" had come out three days before and became two times platinum later.

During the band's dissolution, most members dealt with various projects and almost ten years later, the band returned with Gary Rossington, Powell, Wilkeson, Pyle and Ed King who had left in 1975. Van Zany's brother, Johnny joined them and recorded a live album as a tribute to the members that lost their lives in the plane crash, which came out in 1988, under the name "Southern by the Grace of God". Their first studio album after the reunion was "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991", followed by "The Last Rebel", almost two years later.

In the following years, the band released seven studio albums, a few live albums and several compilation albums. Wilkeson died in 2001 and was replaced by Ean Evans who also passed away in 2008, as well as Ed King in 2018. In early 2009, Powell also died of a heart attack and Peter Keys took his place. Lynyrd Skynyrd continue touring around the world until today and the oldest remaining members of the line-up are Gay Rossington, Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant. They entered at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November of 2008.
