Citizen Cope was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up mainly in Washington, D.C. and started his music career playing with Basehead as a DJ. His real name is Clarence Greenwood and he has a daughter with artist Alice Smith.
Firstly, he released his own album "Cope Citizen" in 1992 (limited 500 copies). Almost 8 years later in 2000, after a new music contract, a second homonymous album came out, in 2002, which contained an alternative sound, with hip hop, soul, folk and blues elements and received positive reviews.
Cope's next albums were 2004's "The Clarence Greenwood Recordings" and "Every Waking Moment", that came out in 2006, that entered at the American charts. He established "Rainwater Recordings later and he followed a more liberated career. His next album was "The Rainwater LP", which came out in 2010, including the song "Heading Hands". In 2002, the song "Let the Drummer Kick" from his second album, was certificated gold. Citizen Cope's recent album is "Heroin and Helicopters", with the song "Justice" to have already been praised by critics.
Many live shows, fests and other events are included in Citizen Cope's career. He supported great artists such as Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews Band, while he has shared the scene with Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow and others. Also, some artists like Core Taylor, Brett Dennen and Richie Havens have covered his songs and he has collaborations with Dido and Rhymefest (Che Smith). A lot of Citizen Cope's songs have been used in films, soundtracks and TV-shows.
