CHIC started in 1976, in New York City, when Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards worked together and formed a band with the name of the city. They changed it later to CHIC and hired Tony Thompson as a drummer in 1977. After taking part in several lives, Raymond Jones (keyboards) and Norma Jean Wright (vocals) joined the band and they recorded their first songs. The band's first album under the name "Chic", came out in 1977. They also worked together for the release of "Norma Jean", Wright's solo album who brought Luci Martin to join the club as a second singer. Later, due to legal issues since Wright had two contracts, she left the band and Alfa Anderson replaced her. .

Their second album, "C'est Chic", came out in 1978, with the hit "Le Freak" entering at the first place on the USA charts and becoming one of their top-selling songs. It was followed by 1979's "Risqué", which contained the hit "Good Times". During these days, Rodgers and Edwards cooperated with several artists, performing, composing a lot of songs and producing R&B and disco records. In the beginning of the 80's, after having released five more albums, the band dissolved, but Edward and Rodgers continued working either together or with other artists. In 1989, a short reunion led to the release of a new album, under the name "Chic-Ism", including the hits "Chic Mystique" and "Your Love".

After Edward's death in 1996, Rodgers kept on touring with many other artists. In the next decade, CHIC with the participation of several musicians, continued the releases, including live and compilation albums, while Thompson passed away in 2003. A collection album, named "Up All Night" followed, came out in 2013 and almost five years later, the band with a new line-up next to Rodgers, released "It's About Time, their ninth studio album, including cooperation with several artists such as Lady Gaga, Craig David, Elton John and many others.
